Leonard is an anthropomorphic polar bear and one of the three tritagonists of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie. He is a friend and ally of Rudolph.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie[]

Leonard first meets Rudolph and Slyly when they trespass into his cave. Incensed by this, he is tricked by Slyly into believing that he and Rudolph are agents of the "Bureau of Cave Safety", and that the shifting polar ice has made his home unsafe to live in. Slyly then "evicts" Leonard from the cave, watching deceitfully as he searches for a new place to live.

Not long after, though, Leonard realizes Slyly's trick. He returns to his cave angrier than ever, frightening the fox and causing him to run away. Rudolph apologizes on behalf of both himself and Slyly, admitting their wrongdoing, before sadly explaining that they are without a place to stay for the night. Leonard takes pity on them for this; he exchanges introductions before agreeing to give them a meal and a place to sleep.

That night, after hearing about Zoey's imprisonment by the evil Stormella, Leonard voluntarily accompanies Rudolph in his quest to save her. He suggests entering her castle through the labyrinthine Ice Catacombs, but this idea is rejected by Slyly, as those who enter such a place never escape. He departs with Rudolph over Stormella's bridge as Slyly stays behind out of fear of the ice queen's wolves.

As Leonard and Rudolph ascend the precarious mountainside, they come across an entrance to the Catacombs. By following the reverberations of Zoey's voice, who is singing an excerpt of "Show Me The Light", they make their way through the maze of icy tunnels and stumble directly into the lair where she is held captive. The polar bear attempts to free her by wrenching the dungeon's cell bars out of place, but this effort is in vain; Zoey informs the duo that a key is responsible for opening the cells, only for the ice queen herself to discover the liberators. She imprisons them both alongside Zoey, singing "I Hate Santa Claus" in celebration, before leaving to brew a powerful storm as punishment for her bridge being crossed.

Leonard, alongside Rudolph and Zoey, are subsequently liberated by Slyly. The quartet escapes back through the Catacombs, but end up on a dead-end cliff. Stormella and Ridley show up and trap them, and the former character threatens to freeze them one by one. When Rudolph blinds her with his nose, however, she stumbles and falls of the cliffside, hanging on for dear life on a ledge. She nearly takes Rudolph with her when the platform beneath his feet crumbles; this would be the case had it not been for Leonard and the rest of the newfound team, who pull them back up to safety.

After Stormella becomes nice out of gratitude, Leonard and company are picked up by Boone and Doggle and taken back to the North Pole via snowmobile. That night, Leonard, along with Zoey and Slyly, cheer Rudolph and the team on as they make their way through the brunt of the blizzard with Santa Claus and his sleigh in tow.

The next morning, Leonard and Slyly discover a present for each of them underneath the Christmas Tree. Leonard opens his gift to discover Rudolph's (formerly Santa's) scarf, which he proudly puts on. Later that day, both of them join in on the Christmas festivities, singing and dancing to the tune of "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" as Stormella plays on the piano. At the very end of the movie.

Trivia[]

  • Leonard is named after Lenny from "Of Mice and Men".
  • Leonard is confirmed to have been inspired by Central Park Zoo's famous polar bear Gus who died in 2013.
  • It is unknown if Leonard now resides in Santa's Village or if he still lives in his cave and simply visits instead.
  • In the few scenes where Leonard is shown without a hat, he is revealed to have either a tuft of hair akin to Rudolph's or a more rotund and crudely shaped head (see first and second images below respectively).
  • When Rudolph and the escapees emerge from the Catacombs, Leonard is absent in the scene where they stop just short of the cliffside for some reason. Being the tallest of the four by far, he would have to be visible even at the given angle, especially since he reappears right beside them in the next scene.
  • For reasons unknown, neither Leonard nor Slyly appear in the film's sequel book Rudolph Saves The Sprites, despite being major characters in the film.
